The legacy of Darna’s creator is remembered. This October. ABS-CBN celebrates Mars Ravelo’s 105th Birthday

Mars Ravelo

The 105th birthday of Filipino comics hero Mars Ravelo is on Saturday (October 9), and we look back on some of his finest works—from supermen to icons—that proved groundbreaking in local pop culture.

Darna, a heroine noted for her superhuman strength, speed, and agility, is one of the legendary novelist’s finest characters. Darna, whose story has spanned comic books, movies, TV shows, games, and collectibles, will be reimagined in 2022 by ABS-CBN Entertainment, starring Jane De Leon as the title character with Iza Calzado, Joshua Garcia, and Zaijian Jaranilla.

In May of this year, ABS-Ravelo CBN’s Komiks Universe teamed up with Rules of Survival (ROS) to create a mobile game featuring Darna and other popular Ravelo characters such as Captain Barbell, who is known for his incredible strength, and Lastikman, who is known for his shapeshifting and flexibility abilities. Gamers in the Philippines and Cambodia were able to see these characters and learn about their abilities.

Television viewers also got to witness Lastikman’s exceptional powers in the 2007 top-rating action-dramedy fantaserye of ABS-CBN, “Lastikman,” starring Vhong Navarro.

Another well-loved character popularized by the King of Philippine Komiks is the mermaid-turned-human Dyesebel, whose story has been featured in several film and TV adaptations as well. Anne Curtis starred in the fantaserye “Dyesebel,” which aired on ABS-CBN in 2014.

Aside from Darna, Captain Barbell, Lastikman, and Dyesebel, the legendary novelist was also behind the characters of Kapitan Boom, Varga, Tiny Tony, Dragonna, Flash Bomba, and Maruja, who were also seen on the small screen via ABS-CBN’s “Komiks” series in 2008 to 2009.
