Enzo Pineda upped his acting game in “Malamaya”

“This is not my first pumping scene, but this one is more daring. (‘Yong nauna), warm up lang ‘yon. This is the main event,” said Enzo Pineda of his much-talked-about role, Migs, in the Cinemalaya filmfest entry “Malamaya.”

Enzo plays the love interest of lead star Sunshine Cruz in this May-December story by Leilani Chavez and Danica Sta. Lucia.

“Bago ako pumunta sa set, kinokondisyon ko ang utak ko na I’m this type of guy who Sunshine would want in her life. Kasi kung hindi ko kaya ma-achieve ‘yon, hindi rin s’ya makakakuha ng connection between us,” Enzo told reporters during the recent presscon of “Malamaya,” an official entry to the 2019 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival.

“At kung I’m gonna act my age, ang totoong Enzo kasi ay totoy, relaxed, simple lang. I really need to step up my acting game para maging convincing ako sa kanya,” Enzo explained.

“Malamaya” is a Tagalog term for the color of ash or gray. It’s a sensual journey through the eyes of Nora, a 45-year old unmarried visual artist (played by Sunshine) who is in an undefined relationship with a potter named Jim (Raymond), who is recovering from the death of his wife. Nora meets Migs (Enzo) a young, upcoming photographer. The attraction between the two is instant.

“Malamaya” is a big break for Enzo who is bent on treading the path toward being a serious actor. For this film, Enzo daringly went out of his comfort zone, according to Spear Films head Albert Almendralejo.

“Malamaya” is under the production of Spear Films, ALV Films and Cine Likha.

Catch “Malamaya” at the 15th Cinemalaya from August 2 to 11 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and selected cinemas nationwide. The wide commercial theatrical run begins on August 14. (Report by Daisy Liezel Cuison)
